Chapter 34 – Treasure

Darrel dropped down behind us. “So, Darrel, is this pirate booty?” I asked.

“Well, that’s one way to look at it, Evie,” he said. Julia dropped to hands and knees behind him.

“Holy Moley,” she laughed.

We were surrounded by paintings, very famous paintings that should by hanging in museums, Greek sculptures, and in the center display cases, vases labeled Ming Dynasty.

“This is the treasure room?” I said.

“Welcome to the Redoubt’s art and history museum,” Darrel gestured.

“What? No art or dance studios?” Julia asked.

“Yes, there are… next to the performance center and music hall complex. Oh, the glass and metal works are that way near the art studios,” Darrel gestured and shared.

“You’re not joking,” Alyssa said.

“You know I’m not,” he sighed. “We wouldn’t want the residents to get bored, now, would we?”

“Let’s see? The crown jewels section should be that way.”

“Crown… jewels?” Julia smiled.

“That what Granddad called it, so I suppose that’s what they are… someone’s been wearing fakes for years.”

“And this place is all yours?” Rachel shook her head.

“I inherited the whole mountain… so, maybe I’m owed rent. I don’t know. The Institute’s definitely a major investor, so it’s all of ours, I guess. So, this is actually all of humanity’s…”

Margarite glanced at Abigail.

“But it’s connected to the penthouse, so it’s all yours,” Julia smiled.

“The Temple, penthouse’s just top level,” Honey said, grabbing my hand, “come, the jewelry’s that way,” she pointed, glancing at Darrel, who shrugged.

“Now, Darrel, not that we’re interested in getting engaged,” Julia smiled, “but a diamond necklace would go with this ensemble really nicely.”

“Uh, huh, and how would I explain that to everyone else?”

“Well, we could just tell people you have a private stash of the General’s jewelry.”

Darrel didn’t need to shake his head for Julia to know he wasn’t buying that. She might have taken another tack; however, when they turned a corner they entered a wing of the museum that offered gems of every size and shape, and listed scientific details about each. As we proceeded further, the gems changed to display after display of jewelry.

Honey ran to the display, “Look! Look! Look at these!”

Margarite and Abigail ran after her. Darrel and his bodyguards peered over our shoulders. “Uh, Darrel,” Julia said, “those aren’t like anything I’ve ever considered shoplifting at a jewelry store.”

“It looks like Granddad updated the display before he died.”

“Um,” I muttered, “Darrel, something under 10 carats wouldn’t make me feel, uh, too afraid to lose my ring.”

“Come on, Evie, those rocks,” Lisa said.

“The matching earrings,” Alyssa said.

“That brooch,” Rachel said, “is beautiful—too bad it just doesn’t work with a bikini top.”

Abigail laughed, “It really doesn’t… Evie, I wouldn’t mind wearing that necklace.”

“Darrel, there wouldn’t happen to be an alarm system, would there?”

“As it happens.”

Honey grinned, pointed at him, “He’s the key.”

“Of course, he is,” Rachel sighed, which earned her looks from Lisa and Alyssa, and a chuckle from Julia.

I put his hand against the biometric pad, which lit up and read his palm print. Click. The display opened and there was a mad grab.
